If an animal shelter classifies a dog as „unplaceable“, it ends up on the so-called „euthanasia list“. This list determines life and death.
This list is seen as an act of mercy so that the animals do not have to spend endless years in kennels. This is common practice, as the example of an animal shelter in Houston, Texas, in the USA shows.
Bear was one of 28 shelter dogs that were to be euthanized because no one wanted them.
Yet all shelter dogs want nothing more than to get out of the kennel and into a warm, cuddly-soft basket with a loving family.
Every now and then, there are truly lucky dogs
But one dog was to avert his sealed fate. Bear is an eleven-year-old male dog and an incredibly sad dog. He seems to have lost all zest for life.
His behavior is particularly bad, as he doesn’t even give a glance to visitors who are interested in him. He simply ignores them. That doesn’t encourage mediation at all.

But Madeline Garvis, who works as a volunteer at that shelter, couldn’t believe that a dog would have given up so much.
She learned that Bear had been living as a stray before coming to the shelter in July.
Without further ado, Madeline decided to take him for a walk. She wanted to find out whether he would behave differently in the fresh air.
And indeed, it wasn’t long before Bear was exploring his surroundings with alert, bright eyes, his tail wagging happily and his tongue hanging out loosely.
How could you just put such a happy little fellow to sleep?
Without Madeline’s impulse, Bear would never have had the chance to show what a wonderful guy he is.

At the last minute
Thanks to his transformation, Bear managed to find a new home – just an hour before he was due to be euthanized. Bear is enjoying his new freedom and all the walks.
Bear and Madeline have shown how important it is for animal volunteers to give their love and care.
They are the ones who give the animals a zest for life and make it easier for them to find a new home.
