The circumstances of street living fell upon her not out of choice but due to abandonment in her past.
Realising that birth was imminent, the opportunity to seek refuge away from the streets was lost. There was not a moment to spare in the frantic search for a haven, babies were coming, and she had to muster all her might to bring them into existence.
Racked with heartache, drained and teetering on the edge of weariness…
The forsaken canine mother exhibited both the vulnerability and the resilience inherent in every mother.
Will her narrative conclude with joy? Will her trials eventually yield a pleasant outcome, a turn for the better?
Excellent Work, Mama Dog, The Puppies Have Arrived
The sight of a new dog mother lying powerlessly beside her newborns from several hours ago was absolutely heartbreaking.
The image was calling, beckoning, pleading for aid!
This poor canine mama was completely drained.
How could she muster strength when she was shattered in numerous ways?
Going by her collar, her former owners had abandoned her earlier. Possibly, due to her being pregnant. Without adequate food, water, or shelter, this amazing girl tried to find a calm place to safely deliver her babies, while wandering the streets.
However, sometimes, plans don’t work out. She was caught by surprise by labor and had to give birth right where she was: on a cardboard sheet in the middle of the road.
Her litter of six puppies were born. Tragically, two of them were already gone by the time the mother got them out.
Despite her extreme fatigue, the mother dog summoned the last of her energy and rose to her feet as soon as she noticed people approaching. She had to guard her little ones.
She didn’t understand that these people were there to help. She was in full protective mode, aggressively doing everything she could to safeguard her puppies. It seemed like she wasn’t aware that some people can be kind and not everyone is out to harm her.
The mommy dog attacked the rescue team three times before they were able to safely capture her and her puppies, and take them somewhere secure.
Back at the shelter, there was relief among the rescuers that the mother had enough milk to feed her young ones. It was now time to feed the mother as well.
She was extremely hungry, utterly worn out and was craving a good meal.
She ate three times that day, which is uncommon as dogs generally have one to two meals per day. She consumed about 5 pounds of liver for the first two servings! That’s how famished she was.
After a critical first 48 hours, the puppies turned out to be alright. They began to prosper, opened their eyes and started enjoying their puppyhood to the fullest.
While the mother was doing alright too, she was still a little upset and cautious around humans. But that’s to be expected. Eventually, she’ll learn to trust people again.
If it wasn’t for these kind-hearted individuals, dog advocates, and rescuers, the mother and her puppies would have succumbed to starvation.
After enduring so much at such a young age, the mama dog finally got to enjoy the life she always deserved.
I understand we can’t save or adopt every stray dog or solve world hunger. But we can certainly contribute a few dollars to feed the dogs in our neighbourhood. If everyone was willing to help, the number of needy stray dogs would diminish greatly.
