It’s a cold Sunday morning in January 2024.

A man is walking along a small frozen lake in a city park in Fort Wayne, Texas, when he discovers a black spot on the ice and hears barking.

He has little doubt who is in distress and calls the police.

Twice lucky in misfortune

Officer Trent Hullinger doesn’t waste a second and races to the frozen lake.

There he sees not one, but two black spots, which turn out to be Labradors when he gets closer.

The two pelt-noses are twice lucky. First of all, they are lucky that the ice is carrying them. If they had broken in, it would have been their death sentence.

But even their current situation is bad enough. Standing on the ice with their bare paws for a long time in sub-zero temperatures is a situation you wouldn’t wish on any dog.

Thanks to the attentive resident who informed the police, the rescue can now take place.

Too high

Why don’t the two dogs just jump to the shore? Unfortunately, that’s not possible.

The small lake in the city park is surrounded by a concrete edge and the water or ice surface is well below the upper end of the boundary.

The two Labradors can put their front paws on the concrete, but they can’t jump out.

Fortunately, this is no longer necessary. Two quick grabs from Officer Trent Hullinger are all it takes and the two frozen Labradors are standing on dry land.

Well recovered

As the dogs are not chipped and cannot be assigned to an owner, the police officer hands them over to Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control.

Here they can recover from their icy ordeal. Fortunately, the dogs have not suffered any permanent damage from hypothermia.

„They are doingwell and are in excellent health,“

says a spokesman.

Waiting

Now the two are waiting for their owner to contact the police and pick them up. That this will happen is by no means certain.

All too often dogs are simply abandoned and left behind in the USA, just as they are in Germany.

If no one comes forward, the two Labradors are put up for adoption.
