Sometimes things happen in life that make us wonder how they could have happened..
That’s what happened to three fishermen, Mallory Harrigan, Cliff Russell and Allan Russell, who were exploring the icy and deep sea for fish.
On their way to Labrador in Canada, they initially thought it would be an ordinary day – but then everything turned out quite differently than planned.
Suddenly, a creature appeared in front of them

When the sailors saw a creature sitting alone on an ice floe from a distance, they initially thought it was a seal.
The animal appeared to be very hungry and completely at the mercy of the iceberg – so the sailors immediately decided to rescue the poor creature.
The iceberg was shaking dangerously, which is why the fishermen didn’t hesitate for a second and made their way to the animal.
As they got closer and closer to the ice floe, they realized that it was not a seal at all – but an Arctic fox!
He was so desperate

The fishermen could hardly believe their eyes when they saw the desperate Arctic fox floating helplessly on the ice floe.
How had this fox got there? Arctic foxes are very poor swimmers , which is why he couldn’t manage to swim back towards land.
He was completely terrified as he didn’t know what to do – his only option was to just keep floating on the ice floe and wait for help.
From the look of him, he seemed to have been sitting there for quite a while – he was wet from top to bottom and, to make matters worse, he was being attacked by seagulls.
An incredible feat

The fishing team acted immediately to save the poor Arctic fox’s life . One of the sailors, Mallory Harrigan, reported: „He was probably stuck out there looking for a meal.“
His colleague Cliff thinks he may have found a piece of meat on the ice floe, which eventually broke apart and ended up slipping out to sea along with the Arctic fox.

Fortunately, the fishermen were in the right place at the right time – because nobody knows what would have happened to the fox if it hadn’t been rescued.
Mallory and his colleagues became real heroes that day! They pulled the iceberg close to their boat and loaded the terrified animal on board.
He had never seen humans before

As the Arctic fox actually lived in the wild, the fishermen were the very first people it had ever come into contact with in its life.
He was therefore particularly cautious, but despite his great fear, the sailors managed to bring the fox to them.

„At first he tried to run away from us and we had a lot of trouble getting him on board. We had to break up the ice he was on and catch him with the landing net, “ Mallory reported.
„He struggled and struggled to get away until he literally couldn’t move,“ the fisherman continued.
Rescue at the last second

What luck! If the rescue operation had failed, the strong winds would have driven the Arctic fox even further out to sea – and the fox would have been lost forever..
When they finally got the fox on board, the crew prepared a bed for him so that he would be warm and comfortable.

They gave him water and food, as the poor animal had apparently not eaten a bite for days !
But the Arctic fox was still very weak. „We picked him up and he retreated into a corner. He was too weak to do anything when we brought him on board; he slept most of the way!“
At first he didn’t want to eat
The sailor continued: „When we got to him, he was a bit nervous, but when we fed him, he was very calm. For the first 5 or 6 hours he wouldn’t eat at all.“
Finally, the fishermen tried chips and crackers, but he wouldn’t even try them..
When he woke up again after a long nap, they gave him a tin of sausages, which he finally ate with relish!
Back on land, they released the Arctic fox, who made his way straight back into the wild – what a lucky dog!
