It’s a freezing cold January morning when Gavin Crowsley drives his UPS truck through Indiana delivering packages.
Suddenly he discovers a black and white spotted dog in a snowy backyard. The four-legged friend, which Gavin thinks is a Dalmatian, is attached to a tree with a short chain.
„If this dog isn’t dying from malnutrition, it’s dying from the cold“
Gavin stops immediately and goes to the dog. The poor animal is lying on the floor, so thin that all its bones are visible.
The dog has no food or water, and despite the cold, it has no shelter. As the dog is chained up on the property, Gavin assumes that it belongs to someone.
He is therefore unable to take the dog with him directly, but can only report the mistreated animal to the relevant authorities. They quickly find out who the owner is and confiscate the dog.
At the animal shelter, the four-legged friend receives urgently needed medical treatment. He is life-threateningly malnourished, blind in one eye, deaf in both ears and has pneumonia.
The vet establishes that it is not a Dalmatian, but a Great Dane. Weighing around 30 kilograms, he weighs about 50 kilograms less than this giant dog should.
Fortunately, the poor dog quickly finds an adoptive family who do everything they can to make him healthy. He is given the name Phoenix because he is resurrected like a phoenix from the ashes.
The rescued dog becomes a helper
Phoenix’s recovery makes steady progress. One year after he was found, he weighs a healthy 80 kilograms.
Despite his terrible experiences, Phoenix is a real sweetheart. He enjoys life with his family, where he also likes to play and cuddle with the children.
He has also found his purpose: He works as a therapy dog to help old and sick people. He also helps to raise funds for cancer research and dog rescue.
Phoenix was very lucky that Gavin discovered him and didn’t ignore his suffering.
Phoenix’s family hope that people will take a leaf out of Gavin’s book – all humans should treat dogs well and intervene when they become aware of mistreatment.
