The two-year-old bulldog „Dicker “ is to be put down. Thanks to a vet and the Oberhavel animal welfare organisation, the injured four-legged friend remains alive. He is now looking for a new home.
Owners refuse surgery
The seemingly lost bulldog was really lucky: after a torn tendon in her hind legs, „Dicker“ escaped being put to sleep thanks to a vet from Oberhavel.
The owners didn’t want to or couldn’t afford two operations that were essential for their four-legged friend ’s survival.
Seeing no other way out, they wanted to have the bulldog put to sleep. But the vet refused.
„Fatty“ suffers great pain
Maria Erler, chairwoman of the Oberhavel animal welfare organisation, told the Märkische Online newspaper that „Dicker“ was suffering from constant pain. Otherwise, however, the bulldog is in perfect health: „Dicker is only two years old and, apart from the tendon damage, is in great shape.
„Surgery can also help the dog,“ continues Erler. After other vets had also previously refused to euthanise the dog, the vet from Oberhavel contacted the chairwoman of the association.
Without further ado, she decided to give the four-legged friend a new perspective and took her with her.
Last hope animal shelter
„Dicker“ initially found a home at the animal welfare organisation’s shelter. The first operation on 16 November went well. Now the furry friend is waiting for her second operation in three months. The animal welfare organisation has to pay a total of EUR 3,000 for the expensive operation – that’s a lot of money for a non-profit organisation.
„We’re hoping for donations,“ says Erler, referring to the organisation’s own donation account on Facebook.
Pet insurance saves lives
Erler advises pet owners to urgently take out pet insurance for their pets. This is the only way to avoid high costs for spontaneously necessary operations and prevent the animal being handed over to an animal shelter.
„Especially now, when vet costs are set to rise by half, this is becoming increasingly important,“ emphasised Erler.
Regardless of the financial burden, there is no question for the chairwoman of the organisation that she would do the same thing again and again. „Dicker“ has a friendly nature and gets on well with children and other dogs.
Erler was clear: „If he is healthy, we can place him well.“ Until then, the bulldog will stay in Tornow. Nevertheless, the animal welfare organisation is very hopeful that the four-legged friend will find a new, loving home before his second operation.
