Fallen out of the nest
Jessica is picking up her son from the bus stop when she sees something small and pink lying on the ground.
As she approaches it, she realizes that it is a young wild animal. She assumes that the helpless creature has fallen out of its nest.
She collects the indefinable pink thing and takes it home with her without further ado.
The first night
Although she does not assume that the little one will survive the night, she gets up again and again that first night to check whether the helpless creature is still alive.
She feeds it milk, gives it cuddles with her finger or a cotton bud and makes sure that the spherical thing is comfortable.
The next morning comes the surprise: the little rascal is still alive. Jessica and her son are still puzzling over what kind of animal it is.
What kind of animal is it now?
But after a few days, the little creature not only develops a great personality, but can also be clearly identified as a squirrel.
Steve has been the new family member since the first night and Jessica sees herself as his surrogate mother.
She drags him to work with her every day in a shoebox so that she can feed him there.
But eventually the little rascal becomes strong enough to be released back into the wild. A task that Jessica finds difficult.
All’s well that ends well
But when she comes home one day (Steve was now too big to take to work and spent his days in a cozy outdoor enclosure), the little rascal has escaped!
Jessica cried her eyes out for days, but suddenly Steve reappeared hungry. From then on, he comes by regularly to steal food.
One day he no longer comes alone, but with a female squirrel that Jessica’s family christens Jolene.
