When the dog Lilo is found, she is still wearing her lead. But that’s not all. There is a note on her collar for the person who finds her.
The words are quite something!
Touching words
„My name is Lilo. Please love me. My mum can’t keep me and is homeless with two children. She has tried her best, but she gets no support“,
the letter reads. And further:
„I cost too much for her. She really loves me and I am a great dog and love to be loved. Please don’t mistreat me.“
The news from the homeless woman moved the staff at the shelter to tears and they decided to do their best for Lilo. However, they also realise that the best thing for the dog is her loving family.
That’s why the staff decide to take a rather unusual route.
They write a reply and post the message on social media. They hope that Lilo’s owner will read the words:
„We are so sorry that you had to make the decision to leave [Lilo] behind. We know that many people are struggling to care for their pets right now.
We know how hard it must be to give up an animal you loved so much because you can’t provide the care they need. We sympathise with you.“
Touching reunion
These words of understanding alone should warm the homeless woman’s heart and relieve her a little of her feelings of guilt.
But that’s not enough for the great team at McKamey Animal Centre, so they continue to write:
„We want you to know that [Lilo] is safe and we will take the best care of her that we can. […] But if you are reading this, we hope you will come forward and take her back.“
To encourage the homeless mum to take this step, the shelter staff make her a promise:
„We will do our best to help you with anything you need to keep her. Lilo definitely misses you, and we want nothing more than for her to return to the family that loves her.“
And the animal rights activists are in luck. Just a few days after the message went online, the desperate woman had the courage to come to the animal shelter.
There she is reunited with her beloved dog. Now the animal shelter wants to do everything it can to support Lilo and her mum!
