Jennifer Hancock is the founder and director of Hancock Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation in the US state of Indiana.
Rescuing and caring for native wildlife is Jennifer’s mission. One day she is out walking near her home.
When she happens to look into a tree, she is amazed.
Cookie comes to visit
Two friendly eyes are actually looking at her from above and the owner of these eyes is no stranger to Jennifer.
Sitting there between the branches is none other than Cookie the raccoon.
Jennifer had found the then still very small raccoon together with a sibling on the side of the road and brought them to her rehabilitation center.
The two little cubs were orphans at the time and would not have survived alone in the wild. So now Cookie is here to pay a friendly visit to her rescuer.
A little gobshite
Jennifer is incredibly proud of the young raccoon lady. After all, Cookie can justifiably be called her foster child.
When she came to Jennifer together with the second little raccoon, they both initially lived in a separate enclosure.
Once they had recovered and regained their strength, they were then integrated into a group with other young raccoons.
Cookie was already something very special back then and Jennifer remembers this time with pleasure:
„Cookie was always really silly. She was always the first to run through the tunnel, the first to play with new toys, the first to splash in the water when I filled her pool and the first to grab a shovel when I cleaned the enclosure.“
Don’t forget the nice lady
When the time was right, Cookie was released into the wild on the grounds of the rehabilitation center.
In addition to lots of trees, there is also a small stream where the raccoons can quench their thirst.
The fact that Cookie now appears at Jennifer’s house is proof that she has not forgotten the nice woman.
