This is probably the most unusual rescue operation the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) has ever been called out to.
A woman reports that she has discovered a large paw under her car – and it’s definitely not a small cat, raccoon or marten.
Scurried under the car and disappeared
The woman becomes aware of barking outside the house in the morning. She immediately realises that it is not her own dogs barking, as she knows their voices very well.
Curious and at the same time a little worried, she looks at the footage from her surveillance camera and sees a tall brown figure.
The figure scurries under the woman’s car and is no longer visible.
This seems strange to the car owner and she goes out to have a look. Perhaps a street dog looking for protection has hidden under her car?
Yes and no. As the woman realises, it really is a dog and it’s under the car too. At least a dog’s paw and tail are under the car.
The rest of the dog is obviously in the car, in the engine compartment to be precise.
That explains why the dog didn’t get out again. He is stuck after, for whatever reason, he had the disastrous idea of climbing into the car from underneath.
Astonished rescuers
When the woman calls the AHS animal rescuers for help, they are almost speechless with astonishment.
Ruthie Jesus and McKenzie Dunnington have rescued many kittens, adult cats and even once a small puppy from an engine compartment.
So it’s not at all unusual for an animal to hole up in this place. However, they have never seen a full-grown large dog in a car engine before.
So this mission is a real first – but there is not much time to marvel, the poor animal in the accident has to be rescued.
They cannot pull the dog out from underneath, as they would risk injuring him as he is stuck in a narrow gap.
However, they can see and reach it from above, and in just 15 minutes the two rescuers manage to free the four-legged friend.
As it turns out, it is a 22-kilogram dog who is a little confused and scared at first, but is then very happy to be out in the fresh air again and able to move around freely.
She even freaks out with joy, jumps around and thanks her rescuers with exuberant kisses.
A new life for Nova
The dog is obviously a stray. So Nova, as she is now called, is not only taken to the vet after her rescue, but then moves into the AHS animal shelter.
She survived her unusual adventure well, with only a few harmless scratches on her ears.
Nova will only stay at the animal shelter temporarily. Her rescuers hope that she will soon find a loving home and will no longer have to hide away anywhere.
