It was just a normal afternoon in January. And Hanna Wilson and her son actually just wanted to take a short trip in the car. Saving lives was definitely not on the agenda.
But then things turned out quite differently than planned in Rock Point, Arizona. Hanna saw two black and white fluffy mountains in the middle of the busy, unpaved road.
And these prompted her to stop immediately and take action. What she saw took her breath away. The fluffy balls were 8 puppies – but there was no sign of their family.
Rescue between speeding cars
There was a lot of through traffic on the road. And more than one car almost hit the little fur noses time and time again.
Hanna didn’t hesitate for long and contacted a rescue organization she could rely on. She sent them a message on Facebook:
„Help! Help! Someone abandoned 8 puppies on a dirt road in Rock Point, Arizona!“
Shelby Davis, the director of Soul Dog Rescue, didn’t hesitate either. She dropped everything and set off to find Hanna and the puppies.
A huge surprise on the way
It took Davis an hour to get to Rock Point. And she received another message from Hanna before she arrived.
It wasn ‚t just 8 puppies huddled together on the road – it was 13! 5 of the baby fur noses had been hiding and were now slowly coming out onto the road too.
As the traffic was getting heavier, Hanna and her son decided to catch as many puppies as possible. Her son ran after the little fur balls and managed to get them all into a box.
From the crate to the rescue center
Davis helped the two of them get the puppies into their car. She is extremely grateful to mother and son for stopping. Unfortunately, it is very rare for people to pay attention to abandoned dogs.
That was also the case that day. In fact, Hanna and her son were the only ones who stopped and helped immediately.
Mother and son are great proof that it takes people like them to protect and save animals.
Fortunately, there are now more and more people who think and act like this and don’t turn a blind eye.
13 furballs with unique personalities
The little furballs seem to have survived their adventure well. Even in Davis‘ car, she was able to recognize their exuberant personalities.
Some of the puppies were already talking to Davis on the way to the vet. As soon as she turned to look at them.
The vet examined the little rascals and gave them food and water. Fortunately, the little ones were already old enough to eat wet food. This helped them to get fit again quickly.
Apparently the puppies were almost dehydrated. Davis had never seen dogs drink as much as this little gang of furries.
Rescue at the last second – and 6 new foster homes
No one knows how long the 13 little dogs had to endure in the wild. But Davis is certain: the little mice would probably not have survived another night in temperatures of around -10 degrees.
Not only were the little ones saved from death by cold at the last second. On the same day, each of the puppies had a foster home where it was warm and cozy.
A huge stroke of luck, because this solution was better for them than having to stay at the shelter for the next few days.
The little fur noses are currently still living with their foster families, but they are not alone here. As the puppies were only between 4 and 5 weeks old when they were rescued, 3 of them are living with a family.
The others were given to their foster families in pairs . In a few weeks, the little ones will be able to pack their bags for their forever homes.
By then they will not only be old enough, but will also be vaccinated and neutered or spayed.
Until then, the brave little dog warriors will enjoy the love and affection of their temporary humans – and will grow bigger and happier from day to day.
